What is name divination名 の 数

Seimei-handan counts the strokes of the characters in a name, combines them into five grids, and reads the tendency of a life from each. What each number means comes from a table known as the 81 numbers. It has been widely practised in Japan for generations, and is still consulted when parents name a child.

Heaven (天格)

The total strokes of the surname. What you inherited — lineage and roots.

Personality (人格)

Last character of the surname plus first of the given name. The core of your character — the most important grid.

Earth (地格)

The total strokes of the given name. Your youth, and your innate talent.

Outer (外格)

Total minus Personality. Relationships, and how the world sees you.

My name is in the Latin alphabet. Does this work?
Yes. Enter it as you normally write it — "Smith", "John". We count the strokes needed to write each block capital (A = 3, O = 1, W = 4, and so on), then run the same five-grid calculation. This is a convention rather than a doctrine, and Japanese schools of name divination differ on it, so treat a romanised reading as indicative rather than definitive. Kanji, hiragana and katakana are also fully supported.
Which stroke counts do you use?
We use modern (shinjitai) stroke counts — the way the characters are actually written today. Some traditional schools insist on the older forms, which can give a different number for the same character. We say so plainly rather than pretending there is one correct answer.
What are the "Three Talents"?
A second layer of the reading. The Heaven, Personality and Earth grids are each converted into an element (from the last digit of the stroke count), and we then ask whether those three elements generate or control one another. A configuration where nothing clashes is read as letting your natural qualities come through unobstructed.
